Onana dropped by Amorim for Newcastle vs Man Utd after high-profile mistakes

The goalkeeper Andre Onana van Manchester United has been dropped for Sunday's Premier League match against Newcastle United.

Onana made two mistakes on Thursday when Ruben Amorim's side was held to a 2-2 draw by Lyon in the first stage of their Europa League quarter final.

The Cameroon International has played every minute of the Premier League matches of Manchester United since he came to the club in 2023, but has been omitted from the team for the Super Sunday Clash and did not travel to Tyneside.

He will be replaced by Altay Bayindir, who has only played six times this season so far.

Onana came in for criticism before the Europa League First Been against Lyon against Lyon when former United player Nemanja Matic described him as “one of the worst keepers in the history of Man United”.

The 29-year-old, who had asked Matic's reaction by claiming that he was “better” his side than their French opponents, did little to have the headlines suppressed by the free kick of Thiago Almada to find the net and then let Georges Mikautadze's strike in the path of Rayan Cherki 2-2 in the fifth and last minute.

Amorim defended his goalkeeper after the game and said that he “really confidently” remained in the player, but has chosen to make a change against the magpies.

Onana came to Manchester United from Inter Milan in 2023 for around £ 47 million and won the FA Cup in his first season.
