Onana reveals Arsenal and Chelsea approaches after making Man Utd exit decision

Andre Onana first made a name for himself at Ajax and that led to interest from Arsenal and Chelsea – only to reject both – before he ended up in Manchester United

Andre Onana admits that he had the opportunity to become a member of Arsenal and Chelsea before he ended up in Manchester United later. The Cameroon star burst on stage in Ajax – which resulted in Premier League interest in his services.

He was finally up to a large number of players who left the Dutch outfit, but if it had changed, he could have played in the Premier League for one of the Rivals of United. Onana was part of the team, led by Erik ten Hag, which made the last four of the Champions League in 2019.

The will of Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt continued after those exploits and Onana had a number of Europe's largest clubs that chased him.

He was asked to name the clubs where he came to Ajax during his time and told Le Media Carre: “I had Monaco, I had nice, I had Atletico de Madrid, I had Chelsea, Arsenal.”

Pressed whom he came closest to Ajax, Onana replied: “Lyon. I spoke with the president, the technical director, so it was still advanced. It was hard for me to talk to the president because I decided to learn Italian.”

Onana later ended up in Inter Milan, of whom he became a member after completing a doping ban. With the Italians he reached the Champions League final with his stock again in the turnout and ten hag beat again, and just spent shy of £ 50 million to take him to Manchester.

He was quickly mentioned at Old Trafford after replacing David de Gea, but was not convinced during his time. His ability to play out was an important reason behind the club that chased him, but he made a number of blunders that led directly to goals.

Onana, however, will swallow a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia to stay as no 1 of United – on condition that they want him. Onana is connected to a summer movement to the Saudi Pro League after another turbulent season in United. The keeper wants to stay in United after this summer and will only go if the club tells him that they want to discharge him.

The 28-year-old admits that the attention for the club means that you are always in the spotlight and you know if things are not going well.

He said: “The exposure. If things are going well, you are on a cloud, if things go bad, you are lower than that. That is why it is important to find the right balance, it is not to forget why you got there, there is a lot of pressure on this club.”
