Arsenal finally completed the signing of Martin Zubimendi, whose arrival of Real Sociedad was officially made on Sunday. The 26-year-old, whose release clause of € 60 million was activated by the Premier League side, leaves San Sebastian at the Txuri Urdin after 14 years.
The move from Zubimendi to Arsenal has been on the cards for several weeks, but a deal has now only been officially closed because La Real has asked that it was registered during the 2025-26 season, so that they can ensure that they can spend more of the funds of this sale.
When announcing the arrival of Zubimendi, Arsenal confirmed that Zubimendi would wear the number 36 sweater in North London. Although this could come as a surprise, given that 5 was available because of the departure of Thomas Partey, the decision actually has a lot of meaning for the Spain International.
According to MD, 36 was the song that Zubimendi was wearing his debut for La Real in April 2019. Given that it is his boy's club, it has a special meaning for him, so he has chosen to decorate it during this new phase of his career in Arsenal.
The move to Arsenal enables Zubimendi to reunite with two players he was next to La Real: Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino. The first only spent one season (2019-2020) in the Reale Arena, while Merino-Die is also international teammates with Zubimendi-Zes year in Donostia-San Sebastian before moving to North London last summer.
On paper, the signing of Zubimendi is excellent for Arsenal, given that he is one of the best defensive midfielders in the world. Mikel Arteta will hope that the arrival of his countryman will help his party to finally end their wait for a Premier League title, which they last won during the 2003-04 season.
