Michael Owen has described three Manchester United stars for “sleeping” during the miserable loss of Sunday in Tottenham.
United suffered a bad result in the midst of a turbulent campaign when colleague Premier League thrusters Spurs picked up a much needed 1-0 victory thanks to the winner of James Maddison after just 13 minutes.
Ex-man Utd star Owen, 45, continued to rumble with Ruben Amorim's three center-backs Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Harry Maguire and brought them to a full blast during his analysis after the game.
The Liverpool -legend gave them the blame for Maddison's goal, because they “did nothing” when goalkeeper Andre Onana parried Lucas Bergvall's shot.
None of them pursued the rebound and that was able to first come to the ball and beat Onana from a close distance.
However, the legendary striker was not only frustrated about Tottenham's goal, because he was also furious with Maguire, De Ligt and Mazraoui's general achievements during the competition.
Owen said to Premier League Productions: “What frustrates me more than anything about the Manchester United team is that those center halves do nothing during the game.
“They hardly pick up players, but when you ask them to do one job – stop the man who photographs – they also sleep with that.
“We have seen so many clips in the first half when there is no one to pick up, there are three who literally do nothing about it. They will not penetrate, they are not going to mark anyone, they are just there.
“It is the easiest position on the field in theory because they are asked to do nothing. The manager plays so many defenders and none of them picks up someone.
“Midfield for Manchester United must be the most difficult place to play in the Premier League and the defense should be the easiest because they literally mark anyone, ever.
“They are not doing anything there and everyone else is all over the field in the minority.”
United is now 15th in the Premier League table with 12 points that separate them from the relegation zone.
