Match report
It was Pachuca who had the first effort at 10 minutes, while Christian Zawieschitzky struck the efforts of Captain Salomóon Rondon from a narrow corner in the goal of Salzburg. The 18-year-old debutant also dropped Elias Montiel shortly before his side enjoyed a period of dominance in the middle of half, albeit without testing Carlos Moreno.
Rondon came again near a open half -hour, but Zawieschitzky threw the header of the Venezola brilliant on the crossbar.
Some of the Mexican supporters in the stadium stood on their feet five minutes later, but the volley of Agustín Palavecino ramed the wrong side of the net. The Israeli international Oscar Gloukh had tested the Pachuca defense, fired a shot over the bar at 40 minutes, shortly before he slid along a defender on the edge of the box and curled a nice effort in the corner to give his side the lead during the break.
Zawieschitzky's evening got even better six minutes after the restart when he boomed Rondon one-on-one, but in reality the striker made it much too easy for the keeper of Salzburg.
Only 10 minutes after the restart, the game was delayed for an hour and a half due to bad weather in the Cincinnati area, but almost immediately after the restart, Pachuca equalized in a stunning way. Bryan Gonzalez hit a free kick from the right corner of the penalty area in the nearest corner, with the so far excellent Zawieschitzky caught cold, perhaps a cross expected.
With the rain that still fell, the goal gave the men of Jaime Lozano, and replacement John Kennedy gave the defense food of the Austrians.
However, it was a change made by Thomas Letsch who turned the script over in favor of Salzburg by fifteen minutes. Captain Mads Bidstrup made soil and drove a ball from the right that nodded Karim Onisiwo in the bottom corner.
The Mexican side pushed hard for a second equalizer, but it would not come, because it was ultimately Salzburg who used Real Madrid points earlier in the day.
