Palmeiras will be the underdogs when they compete against Chelsea in the quarterfinals of the club World Cup on Friday, but they will hope for a bit of support from the home crowd.
This summer's tournament is played exclusively in the United States and the Palmeiras – Chelsea Clash takes place on July 4, Independence Day. During a press conference on Thursday, Palmeiras -head coach Abel Ferreira jokes on Americans to come and support his team, “Against the English”.
“Yes, we are the underdog,” Ferreira said reporters prior to the competition. “It can be a good opportunity for the locals to participate with us against the English. Because tomorrow – if I'm not wrong – is the Independence Day, against? The English!”
He continued: “So come to us, come with us because we need your support.”
Palmeiras got the group phases and eliminated colleague Brazilian side Botafogo in the round of 16. The meeting with Chelsea represents their strictest test so far, but they will really take confidence of the impressive impressions of all four Brazilian teams during this summer's tournament.
With four representatives, no other Nation Brazil can match at the club World Cup. Even more impressive, all four of Palmeiras, Flamengo, Fluminense and Botafogo came to the knockout rounds. Ferreira hopes that his side can continue that good shape.
“We will give our best tomorrow and I hope we are in a good time, be focused on our work and do our best,” promised the Portuguese head coach.
“It is true that Chelsea has a large team with a lot of talent, young players. But we have one dream and we will fight for that dream with open eyes, and give our maximum tomorrow.”
