The move from Cole Palmer to Chelsea has been nothing but an unstoppable success, but for Jamie Carragher and Paul Scholes, the former Man City star may have outgrown his new club.
Palmer joined the blues at the start of the 2023-24 campaign and has become the best and most important players on the West-London side with 39 goals and 21 assists in 78 games.
His shape even brought him into the design of England, memorable from the bank to score a stunning equalizer in the 2024 European Championship, which lost the three lions 2-1.
So dramatic, however, is his rise from relative anonymity to one of the most important attackers in the game, that some experts believe that he might be best served by looking away from Chelsea.
'I commented on Brighton vs Chelsea in the competition a month ago. I am a big fan of Cole Palmer, and he played two steps early, but the longer the game lasted, you could see the frustration with his teammates, “said Carragher, who spoke about the overlapping Fandebat, brought to you by Sky Bet.
'It reminded me of Stevie [Gerrard] Sometimes in Liverpool, because he was so much better than everyone else and he was frustrated. Stevie was a local player, but he would never leave, while Cole Palmer is not.
'This is when I go back to those eight -year contracts and whether they are good for the club and players.
“If you are Cole Palmer, who has left his deal for six or seven years, and he should play for a team that wants to win the Champions League, how does he come out?”
Although the blues have been one of the Giants of the Premier League in terms of silverware in the last two decades, they have difficulty finding success under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, who fight this term for a Champions League place.
They can win the Europa Conference League and are in fact favorites to do this, but it is not the boundary on which the side of Enzo Maresca really wants to compete.
The key to making that leap is of course to bring in better players, although Chelsea's transfer ethos has focused on signing young stars to cherish in top stars over the years.
As such, Palmer is in a position where he apparently is the best player at the club, and Scholes argued that the attacker might want to look for more challenge.
'I felt for a while that it was almost too easy for Cole Palmer to play in that Chelsea team. He knows that he will play every week and the best player is.
'I think he needs more, and I don't get the impression that they are [Chelsea] His desperate to win something. '
As noted, Palmer has a long contract with Stamford Bridge and could stay in the club until 2033 after an extension earlier this season.
Therefore, if the player feels that his development is being hindered, he can struggle to find a route with so long left on his deal.
Palmer was omitted from the defeat by Arsenal during the weekend after doubts about his fitness had arisen.
Since then he has been replaced in the English team by Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White, a player who felt many to have been admitted from the start of Thomas Tuchel.
Jamie Carragher and Paul Scholes spoke about the debate about overlapping fan, offered by Sky Bet.
