Paris employs thousands of police officers in city ahead of Club World Cup final

About 11,500 officers will be deployed in the French capital and the surrounding areas for the FIFA Club World Cup final between English side Chelsea and the French champions Paris Saint-Germain, which coincides with festivities on the eve of the national holiday of France, known as Bastille Day, who can degenerate.

No crowd meetings are allowed on the Champs-Elysees, the prestigious passage of Paris that has often been the scene of violence on such occasions.

Although the final of the club World Cup is played in the United States, PSG fans will end up in figures in the streets of Paris.

When the club won the Champions League final on 31 May, various violent incidents in France led to around 200 arrests and 20 police injuries.

On the Champs-Elysees that night, shopping windows were smashed and shops looted.

“For now we are not aware of risks, but we are always preparing for public disorders,” police chief Laurent Nunez van Paris told the BFMTV broadcaster on Saturday.

The police deployment in Paris and the suburbs would be “very close”, he said.

“We will act with great firmness,” NUNEZ warned, adding that he had given the order for every meeting on the Champs-Elysees on Sunday evening to be distributed.

No fan zones or TV screens would be allowed between Sunday evening and the small hours of Monday.

The Avenue will be the scene of the traditional military parade of 14 July on Monday, for which the police will place points for body and bag checks for guests.

The event will be followed on Monday evening by a classic concert near the Eiffel Tower and traditional Bastille Day -fireworks takes 20 minutes, for which a crowd of 60,000 is expected.
