Paul Merson calls out Liverpool fans for turning on Trent Alexander-Arnold over his proposed move to Real Madrid

Paul Merson does not understand why many Liverpool fans have engaged Alexander-Arnold after the news that he will add to Real Madrid this summer.

Alexander-Arnold, 26, has been in the Merseyside Club since he joined the Youth Academy in 2004.

After being broken into the first team in 2016, he represented the Reds in 349 Senior Games and helped bring seven different pieces of silverware to Anfield.

However, his career at his local club will end on 30 June when his current contract ends.

Earlier this week it was generally reported that the proposed relocation from Alexander-Arnold to Madrid had already been signed and sealed. Although Mail Sport understands that this claim was premature, it is assumed that both the player and Real Madrid are convinced that a deal to bring Alexander-Arnold from Anfield to the Bernabeu will continue as soon as the season ends.

News about his approaching departure led anger among some Liverpool supporters, where the England immediately became the subject of widespread abuse on social media, while a fan went as far as filming a video of himself that a shirt burned that was printed with 'Alexander-Arnold 66' at the back.

But on the question of the indignation aimed at Alexander-Arnold, former Arsenal and England star Paul Merson told Sky Sports: 'I don't know what the problem is.

“He came there, he has been incredible. He won everything in the game, in Liverpool, and he goes on for free.

'Look at Antony, he was just bought by Man United for £ 80 million [in 2022] And he is now on loan and nobody says a Dicky Bird.

“This boy has been absolutely excellent for Liverpool. He did not come in like a £ 60 million flop. He has experienced the ranks, he came to the team, he has been phenomenal. And … it's Real Madrid. Do you know what I mean?

'He won the competition [in 2020]. He will again win the Premier League with Liverpool [this season]. He won the Champions League [in 2019]And I see no problem with it. I really don't do it.

'I don't know anyone in the football world who was once created Real Madrid, I don't do that. Fair play for the boy, good luck for him.

“I think Liverpool fans should be happy for him.

“He has given everything for that club and I think he deserves that movement in my opinion.”

Former Blackburn and Celtic striker Chris Sutton has a similar image of Merson when it comes to criticism aimed at Alexander-Arnold.

Sutton said on postport podcast “It's all about!” Earlier this week: 'Only because Trent wants to leave does this not mean that he has no great affection for the club.

“He has been there for more than 20 years. All in all it is his choice. I think with the return – do these people have a good understanding of football?

“I think this criticism comes from KnuckleHeads. He has given Liverpool great service. He has won everything he can win with the club and now he wants to try something else. '
