Liam Delap is set for a movement in the summer transfer window after excel in Ipswich as Manchester United and Chelsea Circle – but the striker has been given important advice
Paul Merson has advised Liam Delap to consider joining Manchester United of Aston Villa with his next move to become crucial. The frontman of Ipswich has been a radiant light on Portman Road, where the team is likely to suffer relegation.
Delap joined the tractor boys from Manchester City and flourished as a result of regular playing time. He has scored 12 times and has a number of clubs that keep an eye on his services with a clause in his contract, making it available for £ 30 million if Ipswich, as expected, goes down.
United is linked to his services while looking at a new attacker, while several other top clubs have monitored him. Chelsea, who saw Delap scoring against them earlier this season, also loves their recruitment model and sees that they focus on younger players.
Merson, however, insists that the English U21 star must be affiliated with a club that will help its style and development. Instead of moving on the basis of how much he can earn, Delap is advised to find a team that will enable him to use his strengths best.
Merson told Sky Sports: “He is a talent, £ 30 million is not much money for a player of his age. He has to choose the right club to go. He plays with a lot of grass for him in Ipswich where teams have an attempt.
“He is a good runner, he makes good runs, but he has a lot of grass for him, he has to weigh where he goes. It is not always about the money, it's about he is a young child, which game suits him, which team suits him for the way he plays and the opportunities he gets.”
Merson has cited one of his former clubs in Aston Villa as an ideal destination. Their incorrect style would leave him behind the space to run and the same could be said about those on the red half of Manchester, who want to play where possible during the break.
Delap, however, has been warned against signing for someone, loves Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester City, who want to dominate the ball. This makes it possible to drop the defense and it reduces the space behind it, which means that strikers have to fall short to involve themselves in the game.
“For me, who checks the box, Aston would be Villa,” said Merson. “Big pitch, they also play at the counterattack, so teams come and go to Aston Villa, I don't mean so disrespectful. But she [opposing teams] she will try. I just think they are behind the ball with a larger club, such as Chelsea or Arsenal, Man City.
“I think Man United would fit well, I think Man United would be a brilliant fit for him. He is prepared, he makes good runs, he is strong, he can keep the ball up and he can score goals. Sometimes people say it is more difficult to score goals in a bad team, but that is not always the case.”
