Paul Scholes has wondered whether Arsenal's new selection framework £ 64 million striker Viktor Gyokeres was the first choice of Mikel Arteta, challenging whether his playing style will match the Gunners.
The side of Noord -London ended their long search for a new frontman at the end of July when, after weeks of heavy negotiations with Sporting Lisbon, Gyokeres arrived at the Emirates Stadium.
The Swede, who resulted in an incredible 97 goals in 102 games in Portugal, will worn the number 14-shirt for the Gunners, worn by legend Thierry Henry during his first eight-year-old Stint in the club.
Gyokeres received his first run through Arteta in the defeat of Arsenal for the season at North London Tottenham last week, but the striker had difficulty having a lot of impact in a short cameo while getting used to his new environment.
When signing the 27 -year -old – once the most important man of Coventry City – Arteta said that he was 'absolutely happy' that the Swede was now a shooter. The legend Scholes of Manchester United, however, is not convinced that Gyokees was the favorite choice of the Spaniard.
Scholes said about the overlapping Fandebat, offered by Sky Bet, said Scholes: “[Arsenal needed a] In the middle, I just wonder if you have chosen the right one.
'Because there was a lot of um-ing and ah-ing, I wondered if Mikel Arteta really wanted him, as the most important thing he wants? I don't know for sure and he has him now.
“He had a really strange career path – Brighton, Coventry and then he went to Sporting Lisbon, and his goal record is absolutely brilliant – you can't take that from him.
“If there is a team where he could go and create opportunities, then it should be arsenal, and it should really be a good match.”
Last season, Gyokeres scored with a fairly ridiculous percentage of almost one goal per match, with 52 strikes in 54 performances in all games for sports, including a hat trick against Manchester City in the Champions League.
Nevertheless, Scholes has to be convinced that the striker, who has never made a Premier League performance despite previously playing for Brighton, fits in with Arsenal's property.
“The only thing I would say to Gyokeres is that with Sporting Lisbon he will probably play a lot on the counterattack, especially in Europe,” he added.
'You think of Arsenal, they have the ball a lot, he will be smart enough to make these runs behind it – a lot of him you see, he almost sprints out of half the line, you can't keep up with him, he rams people, he is quickly and he beats the ball.
“He is going to be that smart striker – we know that Isak can do that. Can Gyokees do that? '
Liverpool Legend and Sky Sports' big cheese, Jamie Carragher, also weighed on the debate.
The former defender of England shares a similar vision of Scholes on Gyokeres, with reference to an article in which the new sports director of Arsenal, Andrea Berta, was derived, was the driving force behind the signature.
Carragher said: 'What I thought it was really interesting was James [McNicholas] Athletics took a piece when the signing was done, and he insinuated in the column that he wrote that he was more of a sports director who signed.
'The club was ahead [Benjamin] Sesko for probably six months, and the new sports director [changed direction] – I thought it was an interesting piece, as well as how that will influence Arteta in the future. '
