Pep confronts referee Rob Jones as City rage over controversial Lewis red card

Pep Guardiola was confronted by referee Rob Jones after Manchester City were held to a 2-2 draw by Crystal Palace after being reduced to 10 men.

Guardiola's side twice came from behind against the Eagles at Selhurst Park, with Erling Haaland and Rico Lewis canceling out goals from Daniel Munoz and Maxence Lacroix.

The result was a continuation of Man City's poor form, with the reigning Premier League champions having won just one of their last nine games in all competitions.

Man City were reduced to 10 men in the closing stages of the match, with goalscorer Lewis receiving a second yellow card from Jones after being judged to have fouled Trevoh Chalobah.

However, footage showed that Chalobah had caught Lewis in the collision, but VAR could not overturn Jones' decision as the incident was a second yellow card.

Man City players protested the decision to Jones, while Guardiola showed his frustration with the referee at full-time.

Guardiola was seen approaching Jones and engaging in animated conversation with the referee.

When asked about the red card after the match, Guardiola claimed he 'didn't see it'.

The Man City boss was asked after the match whether he had come onto the pitch in frustration at the red card.

“Sometimes I go onto the pitch, sometimes I go straight to the dressing room,” Guardiola replied.

During his post-match press conference, Guardiola insisted he was 'proud' of his players despite being held to a draw.

“We played 10 against 11 in the last 15 minutes, we have seven potential starting XI players injured, a lot of players with minutes, the physicality of Palace is there,” Guardiola said.

'We did everything we could to try to win [I’m] really proud and happy for the players.

'We scored two fantastic goals, at set pieces every team is stronger than us at the moment.

“Overall the game was there. Really happy with a lot of things I saw.

'The season started difficult and will remain difficult throughout the season. We have to survive, try to get points every game, win games and move forward.

“We knew it from the start, we have to continue with the players at our disposal.”

The draw against Crystal Palace leaves Man City in fourth place in the Premier League.

The champions are eight points behind leaders Liverpool, who still have a game in hand after the Merseyside derby was postponed earlier on Saturday.
