Frank Lampard's Run as manager of Coventry City has expectations – but maybe not Pep Guardiola's.
Lampard, 46, took on the mission to revitalize the Sky Blues, which were only two places away from the drop zone when he took over from the fired Mark Robins. Many experts interviewed his appointment after his difficult second saying as Chelsea -Baas, who saw him only win one win in 11 games.
Nevertheless, the Sky Blues enjoy a nice campaign in the championship since he took over. After a recent run of seven victories in eight games, they are now only one point of the play-off places.
Much more were tilting the city for relegation to League One instead of promotion to the Premier League. But if someone had trust in football that Lampard would go to achieve great things as a manager, it would have been the legendary boss in Manchester City.
Guardiola, when Lampard was still in the Chelsea Dugout, said: “Frank Lampard was an extraordinary football player and he will be an extraordinary manager. He did a very good season and I am delighted to watch his team.
“They are the elite of European football. If you start as a manager, you have a passion and no fears. You make decisions without a compromise, which he has made by giving opportunities to the young, talented players who has Chelsea because his academy has done really well in the past five or 10 years.”
Since Robins takes over, Lampard has included 10 victories in just 17 games. Their only defeats in 2025 have gone to promotion that Norwich City has followed and at home for champion leaders Leeds United.
Another person who supported Lampard for a clear career in the Dugout was Liverpool -legend Jurgen Klopp, even though he collided with him with him in the Anfield Touchline in 2020. Think about Lampard's term of office on Stamford Bridge, Klopp said: “I have to say that I really thought Frank was really doing a good job at Chelsea, I really enjoyed how they played how they played.
“Chelsea, at the time they were a club with massive expectations, so you can be the first, second, third, not win the Champions League or whatever, with the old property, you were out of a job. Thomas (Tuchel) came clear there, it was a good decision for Chelsea, but I am really what he did with Chelsea.”
The Sky Blues continued their good recent run against Preston last weekend thanks to goals from Jack Rudoni and Bobby Thomas, giving a 2-1 victory. It moved them within a point of the sixth placed Blackburn Rovers and fifth placed West Bromwich Albion, both of which are 51 points.
Although they were dealing with a revival of Preston in the second half, Lampard described the victory as one of his most pleasant. Then it was told that it was the first time that Coventry Preston had defeated in 22 games, the former English international said: “It's great for the fans. I was aware of it because it was talked about as soon as I came in, so I know what it is.
“We are good at the moment, so that you can feel a good feeling in the stadium, and doing something like that is good for those who have long been supporters of the club. So I am happy for them and happy for the three points.”
The next on the Coventry agenda is a trip to the Kassam Stadium to face Oxford United, followed by a home game against Stoke City a week later.
