Manchester City started their Premier League campaign with a 4-0 thrashing of wolves in Molineux, with Erling Haaland under the goals, but Pep Guardiola insists that his team should be trimmed with two weeks to go into the transfer window
Pep Guardiola saw how Manchester City kicks off the Premier League season with a 4-0 thrashing from Wolves in Molineux -and then labeled his team “not healthy”.
City was too good for their hosts in Molineux, because Erling Haaland scored twice and the new Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders led the show when the men from Vitor Pereira were set to the sword. New no. 1 James Trafford was hardly tested between the sticks and another debutant, Rayan Cherki, came from the couch to score a day when Wolves -Fans gave homage to Diogo Jota, for the tragic former Portugal star of Portugal Star.
But despite their banging start of the new campaign, Guardiola said there is critical work to be done on his current team in the two weeks before the end of the summer transfer window, with speculation that increases about the future of Ederson. Guardiola had said on Friday that his old No. 1 would start in the black country, only for the Brazilian not to be included in the competition day team. City insisted that he fell ill on Friday.
Guardiola had little to offer at Ederson Post game, but it was stated instead that the city had to shorten their team in the next two weeks; “Too much. Too many people, too many players.”
The city boss said: “It's not about Eddy. Today there was Rodri and Phil [Foden] Kovacic is injured, but will be back and Savinho and Josko will be out. We had Nathan and Gundo on the couch. I love a deep team to compete in all matches, but I don't want to leave players at home. I don't want it. It is not healthy.
“You can't create a good atmosphere or atmosphere to compete. Everyone must feel that they can play and help and compete with their partner for the opponents. The club has known it since last season, so it's not news, but the situation is what it is.
“In the next two weeks, people with players and agents will talk to find a solution.”
On the impact of new signing Reijnders, who was excellent on his Premier League debut after his summer switch from AC Milan, Guardiola added: “He is a typical player we need in the Premier League. He is an incredible, large signing for us.
“His work ethics, a regular midfielder, occupied many spaces and then after checking with the ball and his movements, and then he tries to find out and score. We know that he is a top drawing for the coming years for the city.”
