Pep Guardiola reveals desire to rebuild Man City ‘in many aspects’

Pep Guardiola has revealed he wants to rebuild his Manchester City squad as he admitted the club cannot think of 'big goals' as they try to tackle their poor form.

Guardiola has overcome six games without a win in all competitions, marking his worst spell during his managerial career.

Man City go into Sunday's game against Liverpool eight points behind the Premier League leaders following their 4-0 home defeat to Tottenham last weekend.

Guardiola had signed a new two-year contract ahead of the match against Spurs, keeping him with the club until 2027.

Ahead of their visit to Anfield, Guardiola outlined his desire to rebuild his Man City squad, with the Spaniard insisting he knows what the team needs to tackle their current problems.

'We'll be back, I know that. I don't know when, that's the truth,” Guardiola said.

'I want to stay, I want to do it. But the moment I feel that I am not positive for the club, another manager comes. But I want to have the chance to try, I don't want to run away, I want to be there.

“I want to rebuild the team in many ways from now until the end of the season and the following seasons

“I asked for that challenge, this opportunity to do it, because I feel it. I know what I want to do and what we need.

“I know the consistency we once had doesn't exist anymore, but what team in the world will be consistent in 10 years' time?

“It doesn't exist, not even in the NBA, tennis, golf, any sport.”

Guardiola was asked whether defeat to Liverpool would end Man City's hopes of winning a fifth consecutive Premier League title.

Man City would be eleven points behind Arne Slot's team if the home team were to triumph at Anfield.

Guardiola insisted Man City cannot think of 'big goals' at this stage but admitted defeat would make their title hopes 'more difficult'.

“In the situation we are in, it is not realistic to think about big goals,” Guardiola said. 'The situation is to think about the next game and find the momentum to continue and that will come back.

'Even in good conditions it was not realistic to think about winning the title in November and December.

'Liverpool are a team that have only lost one game, they are in such good form and are so powerful in all departments, especially in the boxes.

'I always think about the objectives in April/May. It will be more difficult for us if we don't get a result on Sunday, but there are still a lot of games to play.”
