Postecoglou: FA Cup loss allows ‘unbelievable’ Spurs to reset

Ange Postecoglou believes that the FA Cup defeat of Tottenham against Aston Villa gives his injury squadron the chance to strongly reset and complete the 2024-25 campaign.

Postecoglou looked up while Tottenham was beaten 2-1 on Sunday in Villa Park, with goals in both half of Jacob Ramsey and Morgan Rogers who cause the damage.

Tottenham was also lost in the fourth round in the past term and were eliminated from the FA Cup for the first time since 2014-15 before the fifth round in back-to-back seasons.

It means that Tottenham's hope to win a first major trophy since 2008 is now dependent on the Europa League, after he has left two cup matches in the room of three days.

Postecoglou was not helped during the season by a number of injuries, with Dominic Solanke, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven all missing on Sunday.

Earlier this week it was also confirmed that defender Radu Dragusin would miss the rest of the season after he had obtained a front cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

Tottenham will return to Premier League promotion against colleague manchester United next Sunday, with both teams outlines in the lower half of the rankings.

Despite their last defeat, Postecoglou said that the exit of the competition of his party offers the players some respite after a difficult few months on the field.

“Nothing really changes. We now have a few weeks where we don't have midweek competitions,” said Postecoglou.

“This group has done incredible work for two and a half months. I can't praise them enough and plays twice a week since November.

“They get the chance to reset now and to greatly complete the season.

“Europe is still very important to us, we are still in a great place there, and we hope to get some players back in the coming two weeks.

“We get players back, what will help. We had 11 players in the first team today.

“Get that from each team for one competition, and they would struggle – we have been doing that for two and a half months.

“The players go outside and give everything they can. It would be a lot better if they had some help.”
