Postecoglou insists Spurs’ struggles & confident to turn the fortunes around

Ange Postecoglou accepts Tottenham are struggling but remains convinced he is the man who can turn their fortunes around.

His side have picked up just one point from their last six Premier League games after being beaten 3-2 by Everton on Sunday, a game in which they trailed by three at half-time before fighting back in the second half.

Spurs have lost each of their first three Premier League matches of a calendar year for the first time since a run of seven in 1994.

Postecoglou's team also remains fifteenth in the rankings, three places and eight points above the relegation zone.

“It's a difficult result,” Postecoglou told Sky Sports. “In the first half we struggled to really get into the game and that gave Everton momentum.

“We gave ourselves a mountain to climb, but the players definitely tried to get the game back. We just fell short.

“We couldn't really control the game. We struggled to get a grip, both with and without the ball, which allowed them to get behind us. We had some chances that we probably should have taken advantage of early on, but in the end it wasn't enough.

“If you look at the situation we are in, it will eventually go away. I certainly hope and believe that this will happen. We will give ourselves the opportunity to gain consistency in performance and results.

“I certainly haven't lost the faith or determination to turn the tide, and the players showed in the second half that they haven't either.”

The loss at Goodison Park was Spurs' 12th in the Premier League this season, making it only the sixth time in the club's history that they have lost as many as 12 of their opening 22 games in a league campaign – and the first time since 1997 – 98.

Postecoglou lost Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson and Yves Bissouma to injury in the build-up to the match, among a host of other concerns, and knows action is required in the transfer market.

“We're pretty stretched,” he added. “We literally had 11 players fit enough to start the match. We didn't have full control of our organization and Everton took advantage of that and we paid the price for it.”

“There will be urgency [in the transfer window]but I don't have to say it, everyone can see that. I have no problems with how the club is doing things, they are working hard and trying to find solutions.

“These players need help, that's for sure. Hopefully we will find a solution in the next ten days. It's really difficult. We are not the only ones on the market. The club is doing its best.”
