Postecoglou insists Tottenham need January ‘reinforcements’ amid injury problems

Ange Postecoglou said Tottenham are trying to sign players in the January transfer window but admitted it was difficult to do business mid-season.

In recent months, Spurs have been plagued by injuries and struggled for form. They sit fourteenth in the Premier League, having suffered their eleventh defeat of the season against Arsenal on Wednesday.

They have already signed a new goalkeeper this month, with Antonin Kinsky joining from Slavia Prague to ease some of the pressure between the sticks after Guglielmo Vicario suffered a broken ankle.

Spurs are also without first-choice defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, as well as long-term winger Wilson Odobert. With problems piling up, Postecoglou emphasized that he needed reinforcements.

“The club is working as hard as it can and that's all you can ask for,” he said. 'I do know that a lot of work is being done behind the scenes.

“We need reinforcements and must try to make that possible this week.

“It's more difficult in January because you're trying to recruit players from clubs who might want to replace that player, so there's a lot of logistics involved.”

Spurs were rumored to be in the running to sign Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain on loan in this window, although he is now reportedly nearing a deal with Juventus.

Asked if his club would be in contention for the France international, Postecoglou said: “It depends what you mean.

“We were interested and looking at a number of players, but did we get to the point where we thought he would come to us? No.”

Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson and Yves Bissouma have all been added to Spurs' lengthy injury list in the past week. Werner is on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury, while the latter two suffered problems against Arsenal.

However, Spurs will be boosted by a defensive return as Ben Davies, who has missed the past month with a hamstring problem, is set to return against Everton on Sunday.

“There are still a few sore ones from mid-week. I'm just waiting to see how Brennan Johnson is doing, he's got a bit of trouble with his calves,” Postecoglou added.

'Biss is in a bit of pain. Ben Davies should be involved. Timo has a hamstring injury, probably three to four weeks.'
