Postecoglou proud of Tottenham despite ‘painful’ defeat to Liverpool

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou took the positives from Sunday's thrilling 6-3 defeat to Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz scored two goals each, while Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai also got on the scoresheet for Arne Slot's side, who extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to four points with a game in hand on their title rival. with Chelsea drawing against Everton earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, Spurs, who scored through James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke, are in 11th place, having recorded just one win in their last four games.

“It was a difficult day for us and a painful result. Thanks to Liverpool, they are a very good team at a great time. They are very stable and have great belief,” Postecoglou told Sky Sports after the defeat.

“It was a bridge too far for us. We lacked a bit of energy and the ability to compete at the same level with them.”

Tottenham are eight points behind fourth-placed Nottingham Forest, who they face on Boxing Day after 17 games.

“I don't know how far we are from Liverpool. We are still growing as a team. We are 18 months into growing as a team,” the Spurs boss said.

“We've had some challenges with player availability, so it's hard to see where we are. I'm really proud of the way the players played.”

Spurs have conceded 31 goals in the league in 2024, which is the most they have scored in a single calendar year since 2007, when they conceded 34.

Sunday's result was also only the second time they have conceded six goals at home in the Premier League, following a 6-1 defeat to Chelsea in 1997.

Asked if the pressure on him is increasing, Postecoglou said: “I'm not sure what you mean by pressure. I'm not happy with where we are now. I think people judge me, they don't throw platitudes at me. reasonable.”

“I can only get us through a difficult period and get to a position where we hopefully have a healthier squad and can improve our position in the table.

“If you say that tenth is not a good position and that I should perhaps feel uncomfortable, then that is for others to judge.”
