Postecoglou rues ‘fine margins’ of first leg as Spurs prepare to ‘fight’ again in Frankfurt

Ange Postecoglou felt Tottenham's unfortunate draw with Eintracht Frankfurt summarized their season, but still hopes that their fortunes will change in the second stage of next week.

The first stage of the quarterfinals of the Europa League on the side ended 1-1 despite the fact that traces dominated on Thursday.

The men from Postecoglou walked to the excellent opener of Hugo Ekitike, but were rightly to Pedro Porro before half an hour and then had to earn an advantage of the first leg after the break.

Yet Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur both hit the bar, while inspired Eintrachte-goalkeeper Kaua Santos ended with five saves, the last of them a sublime stop time stop from Micky van de Ven.

“The second half that we just dominated completely,” Postecoglou told Tottenham Media. “On every other night you walk away with a comfortable victory.

“But it will not be the season where everything is given to us; we will have to earn everything we get, and we will have to go there and have to fight for our lives and go through it.”

Injuries have destroyed the Tottenham season, causing long periods of poor form that have increased the pressure on Postecoglou.

European glory would give a very different complexion on the campaign, and Spurs was perhaps a step closer if not for the heroic deeds of Santos.

“It's great margins, but I have always had the conviction that if you keep performing, those fine margins will eventually fall for you,” Postecoglou added.

“We are certainly something to drop for us, so hopefully that will happen next week.”

Indeed, the Tottenham boss believes that his team can repeat their performance in Germany and get a decisive result.

“It's what I said to the boys: you can be disappointed about the result, but not the implementation,” he said.

“If we repeat that performance next week, we give ourselves a big chance and there is no reason why we can't.

“They are not going to change their approach, we are not going to change our approach so that we can go there and play in the same way. The fine margins that go against us today will hopefully go our way.”
