Postecoglou takes ‘responsibility’ for awful display in north London derby loss

Ange Postecoglou blamed himself for Tottenham's derby defeat to Arsenal but insisted they would continue with their gung-ho style.

Tottenham took the lead after Son Heung-min's goal in the 25th minute, but went 2-1 down at half-time after Dominic Solanke's own goal and Leandro Trossard's corner.

Spurs came out in full force when Brennan Johnson and James Maddison came on for the second half, but Postecoglou's attacking men managed just two shots on target all evening.

Their second derby deficit of the season sees them languish in 13th place in the Premier League with 11 defeats – a personal best for this stage of the season and more than Ipswich Town.

'We weren't good enough, especially in the first half. We were too passive and let Arsenal take over the game. The second half was better, but not nearly good enough and unacceptable,” Postecoglou said.

'Ultimately I think the responsibility lies with me. That was not our intention when we started the match. The second half was better, but the first half was nowhere near the standards we want to set.

'I'm more interested in how we play our football.

'We have no choice, we get back to work and prepare for a tough match.

'They hurt me, but they are not acceptable. We have suffered too many losses this year, too many games have eluded us and that has to stop.

'If you give up now there's no point, but it has to stop. Right now we have a big game this weekend and that is our focus.”

Tottenham travel to Everton on Sunday and could end the weekend in fifteenth place, which would equal their worst ever Premier League finish under Ossie Ardiles in 1993-94.

In one respect it was a positive evening for Son, who scored his ninth goal against Arsenal and became the fifth highest scorer in London derbies – that's right, every derby in the capital.

But Spurs have now lost four of their last five Premier League games, drawing the other against Wolves and are fourteen points behind fourth-place Newcastle.
