Postecoglou warns Tottenham ‘playing with fire’ without January signings

Ange Postecoglou warned that injury-hit Tottenham would be “playing with fire” if they fail to strengthen their struggling squad in the January transfer window.

Spurs sit 15th in the Premier League heading into next weekend's action, having slumped to a 3-2 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park last time out in the competition.

Their campaign was significantly hampered by injuries, with twelve first-team players injured, including Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario.

Brennan Johnson, Yves Bissouma and first-choice striker Dominic Solanke have all added to the growing injury list in the past week, and Postecoglou acknowledged that Spurs must take action to find replacements.

“I don't think I'm saying anything other than the obvious, and if I came here and said anything different it would be dishonest,” he said Friday.

“This playing group needs help, there's no doubt about it.

“We're playing with fire a bit by not bringing anyone in, but the downside of that is that the club is trying to change that situation.”

Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was the only signing this month, with Spurs struggling to find a squad big enough to compete in the Premier League, Europa League, EFL Cup and FA Cup.

Spurs next host a tough match against Leicester City on Sunday, although no new signings are expected before that match as Postecoglou seemingly continues to struggle without the requisite resources for success.

The former Celtic boss has refused to criticize the club's hierarchy, including director Johan Lange, despite urging swift action in the transfer market.

When asked if there was money to spend, Postecoglou replied: “I don't ask those questions. It's not something I'm involved in, it's not something I have to deal with.

“My conversations with Johan and the club were about trying to get help for the players, and I will let them do their job.

“I still have to manage and prepare this team. We came back at 2am last night. I'm not looking for opportunities for the club, that's not my role at the moment. There's no time to do it.

“I am in daily contact with Johan in particular and he does everything he can to get the help we need.”
