The Premier League clubs could vote on Thursday whether they should shorten the summer transfer window before the 2025/26 season to minimize the amount of the disruption for managers
There is a renewed wish under Premier League clubs to close the summer transfer window before the start of the season. Currently, the transfer window with the Premier League campaign overlaps, causing a manic period in which deals can distract from the actual football that is being played.
Last summer, for example, the transfer window ran from 14 June to 30 August, which means that it ran for two weeks simultaneously with the competition, which started on August 16. There have often been complaints about players who have turned their heads in the window and deals overshadow the action.
The Premier League Summer window closed at the beginning of 2018 and 2019 to combat this problem before it is extended again after the return after the COVID. There are now renewed discussions among sporting directors and decision makers in the clubs to consider re -implementing the move.
TOPE Executives of Premier League clubs will meet on Thursday when the subject is probably on the agenda. The Telegraph reports that it was previously discussed during a meeting in February and needed a majority of 14 to be assumed to stop all trade before the 2025/26 season starts on Saturday, August 16.
However, the idea can be dropped before they even reach the meeting, like those who push it, feel that they do not have enough support from their colleagues. The largest stumbling block for the Premier League is trying to let other major competitions agree with the same measure, so that they are not left at a disadvantage.
In September it was reported that the European Club Association, which represents clubs from England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France, was on board with the change. But the Saudi Pro League that has become the second highest spender about transfers after the Premier League-Zal do not play a ball.
Last year ECA director Chris Woerts expressed how difficult it is to get a consensus among clubs that are all desperate to get a lead over their rivals. “The clubs work hard to make the decision about this within the entire ECA,” said Woerts.
“Next year, the transfer window must close on 15 August before the competitions will start. Everyone is frustrated and irritated by the fact that players are still being sold for weeks while the matches have started.
“A large club in Spain caused a problem, so it couldn't happen this year. That was FC Barcelona, because of all their financial problems they could only put a very late stage on the transfer market. So they broke the pact of the 'Big Five'.”
The idea of a shortened European transfer window collapsed last summer after Barcelona had objected, largely because they needed time to raise money through player sales to register new signing Dani Olmo.
