Premier League midfielder reveals he came close to making Atletico Madrid move

Atletico Madrid had been looking for a new central midfielder for a long time, and throughout 2024 they looked at many options. One of Mats Wieffer's leading players – they considered him in January and over the summer, although it didn't work out, and would eventually acquire the services of Conor Gallagher from Chelsea.

In Wieffer's case, he could have been the player picked up by Atleti, and as he told ELF Voetbal (via MD), all chances of a deal were ended by Feyenoord.

“Last winter I was close to signing a contract with Atletico Madrid. I spoke to them and they explained the project to me. That was very good, but Feyenoord didn't want to let me go. I didn't hear from them again after that.”

Wieffer eventually moved to Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion during the summer transfer window, making it very unlikely that Atletico Madrid will opt for him again in the future.
