Manchester United tried and failed with a loan movement for EMI Martinez, but over the years the Premier League has seen a number of bizarre temporary switches – in which Renato Sanches, Grant Holt and David Pizarro are involved
The daring offer of Manchester United for Aston Villa -goalkeeper Emi Martinez was surprisingly not released, but they are not the only club that happens to be their arm with such a temporary move.
The Red Devils weigh something to do at number 1 with Andre Onana injured and are confronted with a race by time to be fit for the opening weekend of the Premier League. Martinez has been associated with a relocation of Villa Park, but permanent.
United tried to see if they could get the Argentinian in the short term. For Villa, however, there was nothing to win and the offer was hit with a fast no.
However, it would not have been the weirdest loan movement that would ever take place. During the history of the top flight clubs of England, holes have stuck, whether it is a few months or for a season, and that has led to players making the most surprising movements.
Martinez, a World Cup winner and the first choice of the first choice where he is, should exchange the team that finished sixth for someone who finished in the 15th. It would have been a semi -detached who would not have been to his parent club, who appreciated him at about £ 40 million.
The most striking loan movements have often emerged from a club that should get a player, regardless of how great his reputation, in shape again. We look at some of the short -term switches that have happened over the years – some appear to be rather failed.
JESE – PSG for Stoke
A career path that goes Real Madrid, PSG, Stoke City will always have people asked. The Spaniard had fallen into the pecking order in both clubs, but it started with a bang when he scored the winner during his debut against Arsenal. However, that was about as good as it got and he walked out of the stadium when manager Mark Hughes left him on the couch on an occasion. He himself experienced personal problems and could not prevent the trotters from being banned.
Steven Caulker – QPR to Liverpool
So the center half was in the books of QPR and could not prevent them from going down, but his stock was high enough that Southampton offered the defender the chance to stay in the Premier League. His loan was canceled halfway through the season and his championship club punished a loan to the Reds, where Jurgen Klopp was in charge. He only played four times, but two of them had him like an improvised striker.
Andy Goram – Motherwell to Man Utd
In March 2021, Sir Alex Ferguson had a bit of an injury crisis with Fabien Barthez and Raimond van der Gouw who struggled for fitness. His next step? Call Motherwell and go after Goram, then in his mid -thirty. United received the permission from UEFA to sign a keeper on loan and came up £ 100,000 to get Goram from the north of the border.
The player actually thought it was Ally McCoist who played a joke on him, his shock was and initially hung up. He would only play twice for the Red Devils and was immersed in both games after he had held a clean slate in neither onions.
Andy Booth – Sheffield on Wednesday to Tottenham
When the North London side needed a striker in January, they took the unusual step to turn to the old division one, now the championship, for a striker who had not scored a competition goal since August. Nevertheless, they went after the Owls star. Booth moved for a month to Spurs as cover for the wounded trio of Les Ferdinand, Steffen Iversen and Chris Armstrong. Director of Voetbal David Pleat claimed that he had the opportunity to make a real point, but he did not succeed. At the time, rules did not allow loan agreements between the top side of the top, but Booth returned to Sheffield without scoring.
Renato Sanches – Bayern Munich to Swansea
The teenage sensation won Euro 2016 with Portugal, was named the young player of the tournament and won the Golden Boy Award who sealed a move to Bayern Munich. He was tipped to take European football, but Storm was struggling and eventually found himself in Wales. The swans thought it was a coup when they landed him, but he was anything but and Sanches flopped and only played in the competition 12 times.
Roque Junior – AC Milan to Leeds
One of those deals that looked at first sight. A World Cup winner with Brazil and a Champions League winner at AC Milan. His move to Elland Road would be a disaster and the center of the center was sent during his Leeds debut against Birmingham. He would play six more times and about those Leeds admitted 25 times in those seven games and lost six. His loan movement ended within a few months after he moved to Yorkshire.
Grant Holt – Wigan on Aston Villa
The veteran -striker defied all his doubts when he first came to the Premier League with Norwich and scored 15 times. He went from League Two to the top flight in three years, but later left the Canaryen to become a member of Wigan. He was by no means productive, but Villa still chose to come and call while they were looking for goals in their attack. Sitting halfway through the table, they landed Holt, who would only score once in ten games.
David Pizarro – Roma to Man City
If you have trouble remembering a loan movement, that is never a great measure for how it has disappeared. David Pizarro had been adopted for years on a competitive Roma side and the midfielder signed for the city in January 2012, when Roberto Mancini was in charge. He would only make seven performances in all competitions and only scored once.
