Tottenham was beaten to the UEFA Super Cup when Nuno Mendes sealed a penalty shoot-out victory for Paris Saint-Germain after the late collapse of Spurs in holding a 2-0 lead in the 85th minute in Udine.
Set piece goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero on both sides of the peace had been put in to give Thomas Frank a dream start in his first competitive game, with spurs that hold the Champions League winners on Bay for almost the entire game in Italy.
But while Frank was tired, while PSG was rejuvenated by the introduction of Fabian Ruiz in particular, their defense was eventually broken with five minutes to go as a fellow replacement Kang-in Lee Schoot in a comeback goal from the edge of the box.
It seemed that Tottenham could still hold a second trophy in less than three months until the 94th minute bending head of Goncalo Ramos sent the game to the lottery of penalties.
True to the form, they even took the lead in the shoot-out after Vitinha missed the first kick from PSG, but when Van de Ven and both do not score both from 12 yards, Mendes stepped up to cement their heartache when the French champions bounced back from their club World Cups with the edge of the margins.
