PSG a better team in post-Mbappe era, claims Luis Enrique

Paris Saint-Germain is now a better team than when Kylian Mbappe was involved, says Luis Enrique.

PSG rises to another Ligue 1 title, even though he saw Mbappe leave for Real Madrid at the end of last season.

Mbappe spent seven years on PSG and scored 256 goals in 308 games in all competitions, with an average goal every 96 minutes.

However, Luis Enrique believes that PSG has improved since Mbappe's departure.

“I was very brave last season when I told you that we would have a better team in attack and defense,” Luis Enrique said reporters prior to PSG's collision with Monaco.

“I still think we are better, the numbers are there to say it. The players took it as a challenge. Of course we wanted to keep Kylian because everyone loved him, but the team responds to a spectacular level.

“I told you that instead of having a player who scores 40 goals, I wanted players all to score a lot. Faced with a situation that we did not want, but that happened, the adulthood of the team is very good.”

PSG is the only unbeaten team in Europe's top five competitions after 20 games, which are 10 points of Marseille and 13 above Monaco.

They defeated Monaco 4-2 in the reverse match in December before a final goal of Ousmane Dembele helped them to a 1-0 win in the Trophy des Champions in January.

Luis Enrique said that he wanted Dembele, who scored 14 goals in Ligue 1 this period, would become the leader of the team.

“At the moment he is in an absolute spectacular series. His statistics have exploded compared to the start of his career, that is clear,” said Luis Enrique.

“He must be important for the team, not just scoring defensive efforts.

“Becoming a leader of the team is not just about scoring goals. Being a leader is something else. I believe that Ousmane, very clearly, can become one of the leaders of the team.”

Luis Enrique added that he expected a complicated collision at eight times Ligue 1-champions Monaco.

“Monaco has made a lot of progress without the ball. They are very intense,” he said.

“They are a well -constructed team that keeps the field busy.

“They can cause many problems. We saw that in the last two games. They are a direct competitor in Ligue 1 and it will be a difficult match again tomorrow.”
