PSG’s No.1 jersey up for grabs? Luis Enrique responds
Gianluigi Donnarumma (25) has been dropped twice by Paris Saint-Germain within a month. Luis Enrique was replaced by Matvei Safonov (25) on both occasions and has called into contention for the number 1 jersey at PSG.
However, despite reports that the previous goalkeeping hierarchy was reportedly abolished over the summer, Donnarumma started the season as number 1, just like last season. However, the Italian has underperformed this season, especially in the UEFA Champions League.
He was then a shocking omission from the starting line-up for RC Lens earlier this month. Luis Enrique revealed after the match that Donnarumma was not injured. “I want players who are ready,” was Les Parisiens' somewhat cryptic reason for leaving the former AC Milan goalkeeper.
Donnarumma dropped out again on Friday evening against Toulouse. When asked whether Safonov had succeeded in shaking up the goalkeeping hierarchy, Luis Enrique responded evasively after the match. “Maybe. Maybe, maybe not,” said the PSG manager. As always, actions speak louder than words and Luis Enrique's actions testify to the doubts that Donnarumma brings.
Should Safonov, who has been optimistic in his determination to win the No. 1 jersey since joining PSG, start against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, it would be a statement indeed.
