Queens Park Rangers 2-0 Oxford United: Sam Field scores twice as Marti Cifuentes’ improving side win again

Sam Field's second-half double continued QPR's revival as they sank Oxford 2-0 at Loftus Road.

Field's first Championship goals of the season secured back-to-back home wins for Rangers, who had only won in front of their own fans this season after Saturday's 3-0 victory over Norwich.

They are now five games unbeaten – having won just one of their first 16 – and have moved further away from the drop zone and above fellow strugglers Oxford into 19th place.

The defeat left the U's, who had not played for 11 days after their trip to Plymouth was postponed due to Storm Darragh, still without an away fixture since being promoted from League One.

Rangers could have taken an early lead when defender Jimmy Dunne met Nicolas Madsen's cross, but he planted the ball back across goal and wide.

For the visitors, Cameron Brannagan, making his 300th Oxford appearance, shot too close to Rangers keeper Paul Nardi and Idris El-Mizouni's deflected shot flew wide.

U's youngster Tyler Goodrham's promising run towards the penalty area was then stopped by the outstretched leg of Jonathan Varane.

Rangers threatened again before half-time when they managed to find teenage striker Rayan Kolli in the box for the first time.

The two-goal hero against Norwich turned sharply but his corner shot was deflected away by Oxford keeper Jamie Cumming.

After the break, Varane fired over from 20 yards before Paul Smyth's dangerous strike ended with the same disappointing result.

But they broke the deadlock eight minutes into the second half when Smyth whipped in a cross from the right.

Kolli stood above U's skipper Elliott Moore and headed the ball back to Field, who swept the ball home from eight yards.

Rangers struck again in the 68th minute after a mistake by Oxford full-back Peter Kioso.

Koki Saito squeezed the ball and fired into the area before hitting it back, where Alfie Lloyd let it run over him for Field to curl home.

Rangers looked for a third and Saito almost got it after a maze in the box, but he curled his effort wide and Cumming kept out a late long-range effort from Lucas Andersen.
