Ramsey named Cardiff player-boss after Riza sacking in manager debut

Aaron Ramsey has been instructed to save the season of Cardiff City after manager Omer Riza was fired.

The former Arsenal star takes the lead on the relegation-threatened championship side for Monday's collision with Oxford United.

The Bluebirds confirmed the decision on social media with a statement of 94 words.

It said: “Cardiff City FC can confirm that a decision has been made to relieve Omer Riza from his duties as a First Team Manager.

“Aaron Ramsey will lead the club for the remaining three games of the Sky Bet Championship season, starting with the match of Monday at home at Oxford United.

“Chris Gunter, Joe Ralls, Tom Hutton and Matthew Bloxham will join Aaron in the technical area.

“We want to thank Omer for his passion and effort during his time as a Cardiff City manager and wish him the very best for his next steps in the game.”

Cardiff is currently 23rd in the championship and staring relegation to League One in the face.

The Welsh side has not been in the third level of England since the 2003/04 season.

Riza hit the club's supporters earlier this week when he hit them as “Clueless”.

The comment came before his side lost 2-0 to Sheffield United, which turned out to be the last drop for his ax.

Ramsey, 34, hopes to perform a miracle to save his beloved Boyhood Club from the drop.

His first match against Oxford is vital because a victory could send the club to 20th place.

The former Arsenal star also remains the leadership for the next two games before the season ends.

These matches are against play-off Jaising West Brom and mid-table Norwich City.

He will be accompanied by former Wales stars Chris Gunter and Joe Ralls on the touchline.

Ramsey is familiar with Gunter and had had him as his best man at his wedding.

Former Tottenham Ace Gunter was also Ramsey's landlord while he played for Arsenal.

Ramsey played for the Gunners between 2009 and 2019, after he made 369 performances for the club and scored 64 goals.

He returned to Cardiff City in 2023 after spells at Juventus, Rangers and Nice.
