Rangers manager Philippe Clement admits he ‘wanted more’ from January transfer window after one new addition

Philippe Clement wanted more from the winter transfer window for Rangers and revealed that finances dictated that Lyall Cameron was recruited from Dundee on a pre-contract.

The 22-year-old midfielder will become a member of the Ibrox club in the summer when his current deal ends, with the Portuguese defender Rafael Fernandes the only immediate addition after Lille, with an option to make the move permanently.

Prior to the Scottish Cup fifth round draw against Queen's Park on Sunday, manager Clement was asked if he was happy to wait for Cameron until the summer.

“In the end, of course, that is a financial decision,” said the Belgian boss, who revealed that Fernandes was not added to the Europa League team, with Danilo, Ianis Hagi and Clinton Nsiala who come in as the three allowed changes.

“We all wanted him to come as soon as possible, but it was not possible. So we had to wait a few months longer.

“We as a club wanted more. We talked about that at the end. We have not achieved all the goals we wanted, and now it is about the team going full for everything we want, and that is to win every game. That remains the ambition.

“We will continue to try to develop this group and make it better. Perhaps because we have missed something in the transfer window, it gives someone else the chance to bloom.

“Lyall is part of our plans that we have with the club to develop young Scottish players or to get young Scottish players with potential.

“We had several conversations about how I see him play and what he could do for the team. So we are really happy that he can come next season.”

Clement claimed that Logic substantiated its adjustment of the Europa League team prior to the last-16 draw next month, where they are confronted with one of FC Twente, Bodo/Glimt, Fenerbahce and other attaches.

Kieran Dowell, who moved to Birmingham on loan, has wounded Neraysho Kasanwirjo and Oscar Cortes, who brought himself back from injuries, stop out, without room for new boy Fernandes.

Clement said: “First of all, it is always difficult and we could only make three changes, so that made it even more difficult.

“We have Danilo back in the team. He was unlucky with his shoulder, with that contact and a bad fall.

“But he will train again with the group next week, so he will normally be fit for these European games.

“Ianis Hagi To get back into the team is a very logical one.

“And Clinton Nsiala instead of Nana (Kasanwirjo) was also logical. So that was three and I couldn't do anymore. So that's a shame.

“Two players who fall through are Rafa Fernandes, he's just here and we have the other center-backs fit.

“I explained it to Rafa and those are the rules. I don't make the rules for UEFA. He understood the story.

“And Oscar Cortes. With Oscar it is the same story as with Dani at the start of the season, he was long.

“It will be cheaper for him to have a good schedule for one competition per week.

“I expect Dujon Sterling and Leon Balogun to be back a week later and Ridvan Yilmaz is already back in training. Leon King is also back in training after his concussion.”
