Rangers spoke with various candidates, including Steven Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti, while they want to complete a shortlist before they name a new manager.
Sky Sports News understands that the former Gers -Baas Gerrard and Real Madrid assistant Ancelotti are only two names that have been pronounced about taking the lead at Ibrox.
As reported last week, former Luton Town boss Rob Edwards is a different name that is being considered, just like ex-Southampton, Swansea and MK Donsman Russell Martin.
Danny Rohl was also able to make the last shortlist, with his future on Sheffield on Wednesday uncertain, while former Bournemouth and Wolves boss Gary O'Neil was also linked to the track.
Rangers are supposed to assess the various candidates before they make those who make the last shortlist and can have a new boss in the coming weeks.
Although there is no forerunner at this stage, CEO Patrick Stewart confirmed on Sunday that the search for a new head coach is “going well” and the club added “look at our process in the coming period”.
That followed that Barry Ferguson would leave the club. He was leaded until the summer after the resignation of Philippe Clement in February.

Gerrard continued to be associated with a return to Ibrox, where he won the 55th top title of the club in 2021, while he denied Celtic a 10th consecutive Premiership Crown.
However, that was his only trophy of a possible 12 before he left for Aston Villa.
His enchantment in the Premier League club lasted less than a year, and after that looting he joined Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq -before he left there in January.
Martin is also a name that is known to Rangers -Fans, who played in the club in 2018 and has been without work since December. In the meantime, Edwards – who worked with Thelwell at Wolves – can be an option for which Gers Chiefs choose.
Sheffield Wednesday Boss Rohl has also been associated with the track at Southampton, but with Will still in the mix at St Mary's 36-year-old, the last shortlist could still make.
Although various options are being considered, Thelwell, Stewart and Co will want to appoint the 20th permanent manager of Rangers as soon as possible.
Rangers returns to the training for the season for their Champions League qualifications at the end of July, with the new Scottish Premiership season starting in the first weekend of August.
Every appointment does not have to wait for the official completion of the American takeover of Ibrox.
An American consortium checked by a health insurance member Andrew Cavenagh, including the San Francisco 49ers Investment Arm, the 49ers companies, is expected to acquire an interest of 51 percent in Rangers at the beginning of June.
It is understood that although the acquisition is underway, the planning for the following season has continued behind the scenes while the club weigh decisions about player contracts and potential transfers.
Boyd: Rangers 'cannot afford to take a risk' with the following manager
Speaking with Sky Sports News said former Rangers -striker Kris Boyd:
“Every appointment is a gamble. It doesn't matter who you are, if you have managed 500 games or you are a beginner. They can't afford to take this risk.
“I get the fact that Ancelotti JR coached at a level. He is clearly a good coach, but we have seen it before.
“I know that people will think that we are sometimes crazy here, but Rangers and Celtic are a different animal than someone else. The control and the pressure and everything that is on coaches, players, every game is huge. They expect to beat Real Madrid, let alone St Johnstone or Motherwell.
“It would be better for Rangers at the moment to gain someone who has insight into the Scottish game or the British game and understands what it means for so many people in Scotland.
“I am now looking at Rangers and there is already a loss of identity for a certain period.
“The recruitment must get better. Rangers must improve and to do that, you must have an experienced manager.
“Celtic is now in a good position in terms of the structure they have. Rangers come in terms of trying to get a structure behind the scenes, but those who have entered as a manager have given them the opportunity to sign who they want.
“Rangers must have an identity that the manager arrives to coach and manage the players who the club signs, because that is the modern way in which football clubs continue.
“Danny Rohl is interesting. There is no doubt that everyone you are talking to at Sheffield Wednesday – we had a fan who came to football on Saturday, and he said that if it was not for Danny Rohl, and the way he experienced his company, Sheffield would be in a much worse position on Wednesday than they are.
“Russell Martin is another one. He really did well in Southampton in the championship. If he is the one who comes to Rangers, there is no doubt that there will be a style of football that will be played, but again, we are not an easy group to please here.”
Sky Sports to show 215 Live PL games next season
From next season, the Premier League coverage of Sky Sports will increase from 128 games to at least 215 games that are exclusively live.
And 80 percent of all Premier League matches broadcast on television will be on Sky Sports next season.
