Raphinha challenges Messi’s historic record

The Brazilian winger has already scored 11 goals in the Champions League and is only three away from the best count of the Argentinian star from the 2011/12 season.

The Barça of Hansi Flick is now in the quarterfinals of the Champions League after beating Benfica (3-1) in another exhibition from Raphinha. The former Leeds United player surpasses Serhou Guirassy (Borussia Dortmund) as top scorer of the competition with 11 goals and now threatens the 14 that Leo Messi has reached in the 2011/12 season under Pep Guardiola.

The Argentinian star is the top scorer of FC Barcelona in the Champions League and also has the record for most goals in one season with the club (91). In the 2011/12 season, Messi scored 14 goals in Europe, a count that has not matched any other Blaugrana player so far.

Only three players have surpassed Leo Messi's count in the top club competition. Cristiano Ronaldo is in first place with 17 goals in the 2013/14 season, 16 in 2015/16 and 15 in 2017/18, all while playing for Real Madrid. Lewandowski is in second place with 15 goals in the 2019/20 season for Bayern, while Karim Benzema ends first with 15 in 2021/22.

Footballers with the most goals in a Champions League season

2013/14: Cristiano Ronaldo – Real Madrid (17 goals)

2015/16: Cristiano Ronaldo – Real Madrid (16 goals)

2017/18: Cristiano Ronaldo – Real Madrid (15 goals)

2019/20: Robert Lewandowski – Bayern Munich (15 goals)

2021/22: Karim Benzema – Real Madrid (15 goals)

2011/12: Lionel Messi – FC Barcelona (14 goals)

Raphinha needs at least four goals to surpass the Barça record of Messi and to get close to Cristiano Ronaldo. The good news is that he currently still has two chances in the quarterfinals against the winner of Lille-Dortmund. The Brazilian winger has the power to break the record for the best player in the history of Barça.
