Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany said he was furious after Jamal Musiala sustained a horrible injury during the first half of their club World Cup quarter-final defeat by Paris St Germain in Atlanta on Saturday.
The 22-year-old Germany international was injured in extra time before the break after a collision in the PSG's criminal area.
While Musiala defender William Pacho challenged the ball, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma rolled unintentionally over the left only of Musiala, it turned under an alarming angle and left him in pain on the field.
“I have rarely been so angry with peace, not against my players. There are many things in life that are important, much more important than this. But in the end it is their lives for these guys,” Kompany said reporters after the loss of 2-0.
“And someone like Jamal lives for this and he came back from a setback. And then it happens in the way it happens and you feel powerless …
“If I am sitting next to you now, the thing that my blood is still cooking right now, it is not the result. I understand that this is football. But it is the fact that it happens to someone who enjoys the game, but also very important to us.”
The Bayern medical team ran into the field when Donnarumma, visibly shaken, fell on the ground with his hands on his head in disbelief at the severity of the injury.
Players from both teams formed a circle around Musiala that was worn on a stretcher off the field. The German daily Bild reported that he could be sidelined for up to five months.
Bayern goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer said that the dip of Donnarumma was “risky” and that he had spoken with his Italian counterpart after the incident.
“You just accept that your opponent might get injured. It can even be a teammate,” he added.
“So I went to him and said,” Do you not want it to be the rest of you, you don't go there? Jamal is there, he will probably stay in the hospital, he has a serious injury, and I think it's just good to go there out of respect and wish him good and just say a little sorry. “
“Then he went to Jamal … fairness is always important, and I would have responded differently.”
After the game, Donnarumma posted on Instagram: “All my prayers and wishes are jamal for you.”
