Barcelona have been given just over 24 hours to decide whether or not they want to sign Marcus Rashford.
The Manchester United forward declared last month that he is ready for a 'new challenge', prompting a host of clubs to express their interest. Rashford, 27, has not played for United since December 14. New manager Ruben Amorim has left him out of the squad for six of the last seven games.
AC Milan are currently seen as the frontrunners after holding talks with Rashford's representatives in Italy last week. The Serie A giants are also set to transfer striker Noah Okafor to RB Leipzig, freeing up space in their squad.
But Barcelona could well throw a spanner in the works. Manager Hansi Flick has told his bosses he wants to sign Rashford to strengthen his forward line.
Catalan outlet Sport claim that Flick wanted to sign the England international while he was at Bayern Munich, although there are concerns he may not get his wish again. Barcelona's chiefs have highlighted Rashford's inconsistency and whether he is suitable for their attack.
Barcelona already have a number of wide forwards, including Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Ferran Torres and Ansu Fati. Rashford can also play through the middle, although Torres and youngster Pau Victor have shared the role of deputizing for Robert Lewandowski so far this season.
As Barça's board have not yet made a decision, Rashford wants to know what their intentions are by Wednesday, January 15. The transfer window does not close until February 3, but both Rashford and United are keen to reach a solution regarding his uncertain future as soon as possible.
One problem that Barcelona face is that in order to register a new player in their squad, they have to fire someone. Defender Ronald Araujo has been heavily linked with a move to Juventus, although an injury to fellow centre-back Inigo Martinez could scupper his plans to leave.
Should Rashford's move end up being a loan, it could boost Barca's chances of fitting within La Liga's salary cap. United manager Ruben Amorim provided an update on the 27-year-old's situation after he was once again left out of the squad for Sunday's match against Arsenal in the FA Cup.
When asked after the match if Rashford had played his last game for United, Amorim replied: “I don't know. I don't know, we'll see. He's a player for Manchester United. We'll see. He has done.” to work. He has to represent this club, and he loves this club, but I have to make choices. [I] already talked about how I make the choices. So it is what it is.”
