Marcus Rashford's representatives met with Barcelona executives in Lisbon on Tuesday, ahead of the Catalan club's clash with Benfica.
As Sky Sports News revealed last week, Barcelona is Rashford's preferred destination if he wants to leave Manchester United in this transfer window.
Barcelona should create sufficient salary space through outflow to accommodate the England international at Camp Nou.
The possible departure of Ansu Fati and Eric Garcia would help.
Barcelona are yet to formally make a move for Rashford, while Borussia Dortmund approached United to inquire about loan terms for the player.
Meanwhile, AC Milan shifted their focus from the forward to Kyle Walker last week.
United relaxed about the Rashford situation
Sky Sports News understands that a deal for Rashford to leave Manchester United looks increasingly difficult at this time.
Dortmund will continue to push, but finances remain a major issue as United would need to contribute a substantial percentage of his wages.
United are said to be relaxed about the situation.
The feeling is that Rashford has driven the move rumors.
Head coach Ruben Amorim continues to leave him out of the matchday squad and has placed the onus on the player to fight his way back in.
Morrison: Rashford needs a new challenge
Clinton Morrison to Sky Sports News:
“The situation with Rashford is that he has not played football for Manchester United for years. He is left out of the squad. Ruben Amorim says he is not involved at the moment so there is a situation there.
“If he stays at Manchester United I still think he has a lot to offer, but the time has now come when Marcus Rashford needs a new challenge.
“I think he just needs a change. He's such a talented individual with a lot of ability. I just want to see the best of Marcus Rashford again.”
Man Utd discuss deal for Dorgu in Milan – Sky Italy
Matt Hargreaves, director of football negotiations at Manchester United, is pictured in Milan as the club discuss a move for Lecce's Patrick Dorgu.
Sky Italy reports that United's current offer is £25.4 million + £4.2 million in add-ons (€30 million + €5 million) for the 20-year-old left-back.
Under these circumstances, Lecce would prefer not to sell him in this transfer window.
United will continue to negotiate to try and find a breakthrough within what they consider to be responsible financial parameters.
