For years, Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández was the highest Mexican scorer in the PL, but the Fulham striker has broken his record.
Now in his seventh season in England, Raul Jiménez has finally overtaken a compatriot to claim a Premier League record. The Fulham man became the highest scoring Mexican player in PL history with a series of penalties against Ipswich Town on Sunday.
Jiménez helped the Cottagers to a hard-fought point against Ipswich and held his nerve to score late to level the match at 2-2. That penalty was his 55th goal in the Premier League, overtaking former Manchester United star Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández.
Chicharito's 53 PL goals came in 158 appearances for Man Utd and West Ham United. Jiménez needed 179 games to surpass his compatriot's total. The 33-year-old has now scored eight goals in 20 appearances in 2024/25.
Jiménez bounces back after injury nightmare
After impressing during the start of his five-year spell at Wolverhampton Wanders, a freak injury cast doubt on Jiménez's future at the top level. A collision with David Luiz in November 2020 left the Mexican with a fractured skull and severe trauma. After a long spell on the sidelines, he returned to play the following season but struggled for form.
Fulham signed Jiménez on a bargain €6.4 million deal in the summer of 2023, taking a gamble on playing in the early 1930s. Marco Silva has given Jiménez the chance to rediscover his form and was rewarded with an impressive display in 2024/25. Speaking to reporters last month, Silva reflected on his renaissance.
“He had a very serious and serious injury and when we bought him he had almost 20 games without a goal in the Premier League,” the Fulham boss said.
“We were the ones who believed in him and that is paying off, not only now, but also during moments of last season. We are very proud of how he is performing and helping him reach a good level again.”
