Reaction: Dirk Kuyt delights in ‘very special’ Anfield return

Dirk Kuyt always likes to return to Anfield and explained why he regards Liverpool FC Legends competitions as important opportunities to return to the club and city.

The Dutchman was part of the team that beat Chelsea FC Legends 2-0 for an almost 60,000 crowd on Saturday, thanks to a brace by Peter Crouch.

All funds collected on another memorable day in L4 will support the essential work of LFC Foundation and other beneficiaries and Kuyt was pleased to play his role.

“Very happy to be back,” said Kuyt, who made 285 performances for the club between 2006 and 2012, to Liverpoolfc.com.

“It is always a pleasure to come back to Liverpool, especially for this occasion, to play for a full crowd in Anfield and to feel so much support for a very good cause – it's always great and it's never boring to win! So another victory, it's a good day for all of us.

“For us it is, I think, really special to be a former player of the club and still be so involved and still feel as welcome as part of a very large family. But I think Liverpool Football Club is an example for many other clubs [on] How you can be that family.

“Of course, when Liverpool has to play a football match … This season, for example, we really want to win Liverpool the competition and we are really enthusiastic for the future. But I think days like today, that is what Liverpool is all about – are all together. I think all former players want to be involved.

“Of course it is nice to play at Anfield, but they also want to give something back to Liverpool because it gave us all back so much in the days, and now we all have the chance with the fans to give something back to the community and that is something very special.”

Crouch was the competition winner on the day when he scored twice before the head and Kuyt enjoyed reunification with his former teammate.

He added: “Just like the old days! I tried everything for him [to get his hat-trick] Because I could play the last 10 minutes, but it's incredible. The first time Crouchy plays with us, very excited.

“We already had a training session together and he really wanted to score, especially for the head. The first goal was great, the second was also a nice one, so we all tried to push him for a hat trick, but for him I think it's a great day.”
