Match report
Real Madrid stamped their ticket to the FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) quarterfinals by beating Juventus with 1-0, extending their undefeated run on the CWC to 14 games in the process.
The Xabi Alonso era in Real Madrid is nicely warmed up with back-to-back victories, but their references were confronted with a tough test against Juventus.
That sentiment certainly sounded where in the opening 10 minutes when Madrid was attached in their own half. They were lucky that they did not fall behind when Randal Kolo Muani racing on the goal, but while he dived over Thibaut Courtois, his daring effort landed on the roof of the net.
The men from Alonso were also left off the hook a little later, when the strike by Kenan Yıldız remotely a poor deflection of Aurelien Tchouameni and centimeters wide from the pole flute.
It took Madrid 30 minutes to work a meaningful sight of the goal, but when it came, they had an incredible bad luck not to move forward. It was little surprise to see Jude Bellingham involved, bursting behind the Juve defense only to see that his picked effort was saved by Michele di Gregorio and then released the line by Daniele Rugani.
That Save looked routine for Di Gregorio compared to the person he produced to deny Federico Valverde in the break, jumps over his goal to turn the 30-year strike of Uruguayan around the mail.

It was Valverde who also had the first real chance of the second half, the fastest reacted to a loose ball in the area and an effort that curled closely from the target.
That turned out to be nothing more than a temporary postponement for Juve, who soon walked behind. It took Trent Alexander-Arnold for a while to settle as a Galactico, but he looked at his best while supplying a characteristic cross on the head of Gonzalo Garcia, who went home the opener.
Their cheers went through shortly afterwards when they welcomed Kylian Mbappé, who made his first appearance of the CWC after suffering from acute gastro -centeritis. His impact was almost immediately because he was involved in setting up Arda Güler, whose low effort was stopped by the legs of Di Gregorio.
For all the saves he made to keep his side in the game, Juve could not find an elusive equalizer and he deposited on the last 16 on their CWC debut.
Madrid is now in the last eight and seems to collect at the perfect momentum, now that seven games have gone in all competitions.
