After a much-needed win in Bergamo, Real Madrid breathed a sigh of relief after taking all three points in the toughest of their last three games on paper. It at least secures their place for the Champions League play-off round.
Although Kylian Mbappé's injury was the notable negative of the evening, there were also a number of positive points. Mbappe's goal was Jude Bellingham's first but continued form and the fact that it was the first time Bellingham, Mbappe and Vinicius Junior had scored in the same match.
According to Cadena Cope, it was the first time that Real Madrid outpaced their opponents in a Champions League match. Los Blancos covered 114 km during the match, compared to 113 km for Atalanta. Their total was 9 km more than against Liverpool, 7 km more than AC Milan and 3 km more than against Lille.
Real Madrid have been criticized this season for their lack of effort, especially from Kylian Mbappe, as part of the reason they have struggled to work together effectively. They are the team who have covered the least ground in La Liga, and Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly privately criticized his side for their level of effort.
