Real Madrid join Barcelona in race for €50m defender

Real Madrid are expected to discuss their defensive options in the summer, and signings could come in all three positions in the backline. Trent Alexander-Arnold is being sought as the new starting right-back, and while there are numerous names linked in the center of defence, the situation on the left is equally unclear.

Real Madrid have been tracking Alphonso Davies for months, who they want to sign for free at the end of the season when his contract with Bayern Munich expires. However, the chances of this seem slim as the latest updates suggest the Canadian international will remain in Bavaria.

As such, Real Madrid will have to consider other options. They are strongly linked with Miguel Gutierrez, who they could sign from Girona for just €8m, while another player on their shortlist is Alvaro Carreras.

According to Diario AS, Real Madrid are interested in Carreras, who has also been linked with Barcelona and Manchester United in recent weeks. At 21, he fits perfectly into the transfer policy that has been implemented at the Santiago Bernabéu in recent years.

However, the report goes on to say that Carreras, who played in Benfica's 5-4 Champions League defeat to Barcelona earlier this week, is not considering leaving the Portuguese giants anytime soon, and given that he is under contract until 2029 state, that would not be the case. It will be easy for any club to sign him, despite an asking price of €50 million being set.

There is no doubt that Carreras would be a very good signing for Real Madrid, and it would also increase the number of Spanish players in the first-team squad, something the board wants to do in the coming years. However, taking this into account, Gutierrez is the obvious asset as he is significantly cheaper and their levels are not too different from each other.
