French striker Karim Benzema may be playing the final stages of his career in Saudi Arabia, but he will forever be linked to Real Madrid. It looks like those last years are coming to an end.
Benzema, 36, is reportedly considering retiring at the end of this season, Relevo says. Current club Al-Ittihad is trying to finalize their plans for next summer, but has no certainty that Benzema will join. The veteran striker is expected to fulfill his contract, which expires in 2026, but retirement is on the cards, if not this summer, then next. Al-Ittihad are also not desperate to persuade him to extend another year, knowing that this would save them a not insignificant amount of €100 million.
Benzema, the second top scorer in Real Madrid history, left the club suddenly and to the surprise of many. He chose not to renew his contract 18 months ago and instead accepted a lucrative offer in Saudi Arabia. If he decides to hang up his boots, Real Madrid will probably try to give him the farewell he deserved at that moment.
