Real Madrid lose top midfielder to injury hours before Spanish Supercup clash

Real Madrid are not that far into 2025, but their first injury problem has occurred after two games. While David Alaba has returned to the squad for their trip to Saudi Arabia in the Spanish Super Cup, Luka Modric will not be available for their semi-final against RCD Mallorca on Thursday evening.

Los Blancos made an announcement on Thursday morning explaining that Modric was suffering from a virus and would be absent against Mallorca in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. They did not give a date for his return, but barring any complications it seems likely he would return for a future final with Barcelona if they make it to Los Bermellones.

However, it could be an absence that Carlo Ancelotti felt. His side's comeback against Valencia was fueled by Modric, and he pulled the strings again in the Copa del Rey against Deportiva Minera on Monday night, scoring in back-to-back games. For Real Madrid, perhaps the biggest concern will be ensuring Modric's infection does not spread to other members of the squad.
