Many clubs have tried to pry Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, and Real Madrid will probably be the last to try. The Basque midfielder turned down a move to Liverpool last summer, but there is growing feeling that he could be open to a move next summer.
According to Diario AS, Los Blancos believe Zubimendi could become a leader for them from midfield. In a similar way to Rodri Hernandez or his idol Xabi Alonso, Zubimendi is a player who makes everyone around him look better in his eyes. His performances at the 2024 Euros, where he replaced Rodri and looked right at home, especially in the final against England, have assured them that he is top quality.
Real Madrid weren't looking to move for a midfielder like Zubimendi, but the gaping hole left by Toni Kroos and Aurelien Tchouameni's disappointing form in midfield have changed their view. Zubimendi will be 26 next summer, available for €60 million (if they can convince him to move) and a fully-fledged Spanish international, which are also three important criteria for Real Madrid.
That said, there is a realization that they will have to compete hard for his signature if they pursue him. Liverpool, previously Xavi Hernandez's top request at Barcelona, will return for his signature, while Manchester City are also interested. Zubimendi shares an agent with Alonso, who has been tipped as a future manager of Real Madrid, but like Alonso is attracted by the idea of playing in England.
Zubimendi has a strong case to be the best midfielder in Spain, and currently the best in La Liga alongside Jude Bellingham and Pedri. His performances have been exemplary for a number of seasons under Imanol Alguacil, and the best way to evaluate his impact is to watch La Real play without him.
