On Tuesday, Real Madrid booked their place in the Copa del Rey-final 2024-25 with a 5-4 total victory over Real Sociedad. It means that they get the chance to win the competition for the second time in three seasons, they were allowed to overcome Atletico Madrid or Barcelona in the final, which will be played later this month.
Real Madrid was far from convincing in the Santiago Bernabeu, who admitted four times to La Real. Andriy Lunin should do little about the goals, but the fact that he and his defense were so weak will play in the spirit of Carlo Ancelotti, who will soon start planning his starting line-up for the showpiece event in La Cartuja.
According to Relo, the big dilemma for Ancelotti Lunin will involve, who has been his starting goalkeeper in Copa del Rey this season. However, the Ukrainian can be dropped for the final in favor of Thibaut Courtois, who is the undisputed number one of Real Madrid.
It would be cruel for Lunin to miss another final for Real Madrid, who is overlooked by Ancelotti for the Champions League final of this season against Borussia Dortmund. Lunin played during the knockout phases because of the unavailability of Courtois because of back-to-back knee injuries, but the Belgian keeper returned on time to play at Wembley, which meant that his number two was banned to the bank.
That situation showed that Ancelotti has no problem dropping Lunin for Courtois in Cup Finals, and the same could happen again in the Copa del Rey, especially because Real Madrid would be confronted with an extremely heavy opposition in Atletico Madrid or Barcelona.
It is still too considering whether Ancelotti decides to make the change, but the fact that Lunin will probably not play in the weeks prior to the game will certainly work against him in his struggle with Courtois.
