Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti – ‘We will need less points to win La Liga’

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has sent a message of optimism in his first press conference of 2025, stating that his side do not need the same number of points as last season to win La Liga.

The Italian coach was asked about the drop in Barcelona's results. He took just five points from the last 21 available, having started the season in good form. He admitted he didn't expect it but said the points total needed to win La Liga would be lower this season.

“No one expected it, but the level of competition in La Liga slightly reduces the number of points you need to win the title. The fact that Atletico is there also creates uncertainty and I think it takes less than 90 points to become champions.”

Ancelotti refused to be drawn into a response to the crisis at Barcelona, which has not registered Dani Olmo and Pau Victor for the second half of the season. As for the rivals for the title, he believes Atletico Madrid will challenge just as hard for the Liga title.

“From today they have an equal chance. As happened to us in November, it also happened to Barcelona in December. You have a slump and then you become competitive like before. Barcelona and Atletico have the same chances to play in La Liga as we do.”

Last season Los Blancos collected 95 points, one of their highest for some time, but they could have triumphed over Barcelona by 86 points, although the equation obviously changes in recent weeks depending on how close the race is. Sure, Real Madrid and Barcelona are both behind where they were last year in terms of points totals, although Atletico are now on a twelve-match winning streak.
