Real Madrid look set to avoid action in the January transfer market again this winter despite major injury problems in the backline. It has prompted manager Carlo Ancelotti to experiment with his options.
After conceding three times against Rayo Vallecano this weekend, full-backs Lucas Vazquez and Fran Garcia were again criticized. For the veteran in particular, there have been doubts about whether Los Blancos can have success this season with Vazquez as the only option there, aside from the occasional use of Fede Valverde there.
Marca say that with Trent Alexander-Arnold's impending arrival more likely next summer, Ancelotti is considering using centre-back Raul Asencio there. He experimented with Asencio as a right back in training and also used him there in the last ten minutes against Atalanta. The Italian coach appreciates his composure and in that position he was able to make minutes against Sevilla in their last match of the year.
Ancelotti was reluctant to turn to La Fabrica even in emergency situations, and remarkably Asencio was almost immediately overlooked for Aurelien Tchouameni at centre-back. However, it seems that Asencio has an advantage over other right-backs in the academy, such as Jesus Fortea and David Jimenez.
