Real Madrid have decided that they must return to their roots in the coming seasons. After the departures of Joselu Mato and Nacho Fernandez, Fran Garcia, Jesus Vallejo, Lucas Vazquez and Dani Ceballos are a declining population factor in their squad.
Los Blancos have made it a goal to make their squad more Spanish again in the coming seasons, something that will benefit them not only in terms of their UEFA registration rules, but also in terms of marketing in the country. Cadena SER say they want a core of Spanish players, and more of them in the national team.
Three names on their shortlist have also been revealed. Girona left-back Miguel Gutierrez is one of them, Athletic Club's Nico Williams is another and Manchester City's Rodri Hernandez is another.
However, both Williams and Rodri pose major obstacles. The former prefers to come from the left, a position that is currently also the favorite team of Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes and Kylian Mbappé. Likewise, Manchester City have him under contract with Rodri until 2027 and are trying their best to sign him to a new deal.
Gutierrez would be a much simpler case as Los Blancos would retain a €9m buyback clause this summer. But for him too, bringing back the Castilla product would mean the departure of Garcia, or confidence in one of them as first choice, something that seems unlikely at the moment.
