Real Madrid registering name change of iconic stadium

The iconic Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is no more. Real Madrid have decided to change the name of the ground they have called home since 1947.

According to Marca, Real Madrid have actually shortened the name to 'Bernabeu'. The stadium's name on social media and in commercial terms has been changed to not include 'Santiago', including the stadium's website itself. Originally called Estadio Nuevo Chamartin, the stadium was subsequently named after then-president Santiago Bernabeu, who was a 35-year former player and president between 1943 and 1978. He is also credited with starting their glorious success in the late 1950s and early 1960s with making the club what they are today.

The Bernabeu, which was renovated and completed in 2024, has faced many problems, with legal challenges impacting their plans to host concerts and also to build an underground parking garage linked to the stadium. However, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has described it as a money-making engine for the club in the future. Spain's first NFL match will take place here next year.
