The departure of Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez, whose contracts expired last weekend, left two vacancies in the CaptainCy Group in Real Madrid, and these are now officially fulfilled.
Modric had been the Real Madrid Club captain, so his exit means that the position had to be fulfilled and not surprising, it was done by Dani Carvajal, who was his deputy during the 2024-25 campaign, who was interrupted for the defender after he returned his ACL in October.
It is a proud moment for Carvajal, whose number two will be Federico Valverde. The Uruguayan midfielder was already in the Captain Group next to Modric and Lucas, and he is now taking the step. And according to Diario AS, the two above players are now affiliated with Thibaut Courtois and Vinicius Junior.
Courtois, who joined Real Madrid near Chelsea in 2018, will be the third captain, with Vinicius – who joined Flamengo in the same summer – fourth in the queue. The decision was made by club officials in collaboration with head coach Xabi Alonso, who counts on all four players to be leaders in the dressing room prior to his first full season in the Dugout.
The appointment of Vinicius, who was somewhat expected, since he has been a Real Madrid player for seven years, is an interesting, since he is currently confronted with an uncertain future in the Santiago Bernabeu. Contract discussions between player and club have been stuck and Saudi Arabia would be considering a world record to seduce him away from Los Blancos.
Nevertheless, it would be a surprise to see Vinicius leave, so he is expected to take his place in the CaptainCy Group for the 2025-26 season, which will start next month.
